Anne Whitlock is halfway to Birmingham when a ferocious summer storm forces her to seek shelter inside the remote Bellflower House or risk becoming stranded in the English countryside. Her detour turns decidedly less miserable when Anne meets the home's hauntingly beautiful owner, Lady Sabine Caldwell, who quickly becomes besotted with her "guest of honor." Enchanted by Sabine's lavish gifts and simmering stares, Anne settles in to enjoy her stay... but as the days pass, dark events unfold, and the rain keeps falling, Anne begins to wonder if her hostess will ever truly let her go.
